About Iyengar Yoga:
Iyengar yoga is named after Sri BKS Iyengar, who lives and teaches in Pune, India. The focus of this classical style of yoga is on correct body alignment and injury prevention. Props such as wooden blocks, chairs, blankets, and straps are used to help people with various body types find correct alignment in postures. These props also provide support so that a safe and full range of motion can be achieved. Physical strength in yoga asana (poses) forms the foundation for pranayama (breath work) and the remaining limbs of ashtanga yoga (yamas, niyamas, pratyahara, dhyana, dharana, samadhi).

About the instructors:

Kquvien DeWeese is a certified Iyengar yoga instructor and has been teaching adults and children for over 14 years. She works closely with her students, especially those with chronic conditions who want to optimize their health. Kquvien’s background in dance, martial arts, and weightlifting expands the expected parameters for yoga classes, leaving students with a sense of accomplishment, artistry, and a desire to learn more.

Chris O’Brien is a student of Kquvien DeWeese and Kathleen Pringle. She has been practicing Iyengar yoga for the last 6 years and started teaching in 2007. Having worked for over 20 years in the fields of nursing and public health, Chris is a true believer in the ability to transform the body and mind with Iyengar yoga, moving toward better mental and physical health and happiness with each class. The self-discipline and close attention required in class gives students the opportunity for deeper insight, opening doors for self-discovery and a more peaceful mind.

She delights in sharing this powerful practice with students. A former competitive gymnast and dancer, Stephanie is grateful for the opportunity to study the eight limbs of yoga with top Iyengar yoga instructors from Atlanta, New York, San Francisco, London, Lisbon and India.

Qi Gong Classes
Strength of Body and Calmness of Mind: The Inner Work of Qi Gong

Qi Gong is "energy work" that helps us refine our receptiveness to both the energy within and the energy that exists in all living things. The ancient Taoist practice of Qi Gong strengthens our bodies' ability to open up and let "chi" energy flow and clear the meridian channels. This in turn helps our "shen", or spiritual/soul energy, to expand into stillness and awareness. This practice cultivates health and vitality, flexibility of body and mind, and dynamic balance and coordination. Considered the mother of T'ai Chi, Qi Gong uses simple meditative movements, breathing exercises and massage techniques that can be practiced by anyone, regardless of age or physical ability.

About the Instructor

Michael Jamison has intensively studied Tai Chi and the Chinese Internal Arts, including Qi Gong, Hsing-I, Ba Gua, and Lui He Ba Fa Form . The owner of Inner Key Wellness, a comprehensive natural healing practice and martial arts studio in Atlanta, Georgia, he is a Doctor of Chiropractic and teaches alternative, functional, and Chinese medicine. He also is an accomplished body worker.

One Breath At A Time

One Breath At A Time An 11th Step Meditation Meeting
One Breath at a Time is a 12-step meeting that focuses on the 11th step and sitting meditation. The meeting is open to all who seek recovery. We welcome newcomers and those curious about recovery in general.

We meet every Thursday evening, usually in the main shrine room of the Atlanta Shambhala Center, starting at 7:30 PM. The meeting lasts about an hour, sometimes a little longer.

We start each meeting with 10 minutes of shamatha sitting meditation after a short description of meditation techniques for those who have nothad formal meditation instruction. Following meditation we read a selection from One Breath at a Time: Buddhism and the 12 Steps, a step study by Kevin Griffin, a Buddhist meditation teacher who is in recovery. The reading is followed by an open discussion for about 30 minutes. We try to ensure everyone who wants to share gets the opportunity.

We consider the meeting to be Buddhist-flavored but not affiliated with Buddhism or Shambhala. Our mission is to explore the connections between Buddhism and recovery and to look at spiritual and contemplative wisdom from different traditions. People who found the meeting useful include 1) Buddhists in recovery, 2) people in recovery who are involved in (or curious about) alternative spiritual traditions, and 3) people who struggle with their conception of a higher power or who have problems with the concept of a male God. We hope no one will give up on recovery because the word God appears in the 12 steps.v

The Atlanta Shambhala Center is located at 1447 Church Street in Decatur, opposite the southeastern end of the Suburban Plaza shopping center, across the street from the bowling alley. Parking is available at the Center as well as at the Montessori School and the Taurus Insurance Agency on either side of the center.
